Washington, D.C., 12 September 2026 — The South Asia Foresight Network (SAFN), operating under the auspices of The Millennium Project in Washington, D.C., is pleased to announce the appointment of distinguished Nepalese journalist Birat Anupam as an Honorary Fellow, effective 8 September 2026.
The South Asia Foresight Network is one of the largest scholarly network focused on South and Southeast Asia operating under The Millennium Project in Washington, D.C.
The appointment of Birat Anupam further strengthens SAFN's expanding network of regional expertise and reflects its commitment to bringing diverse voices and professional experience into discussions on the future of South and Southeast Asia. SAFN looks forward to Birat Anupam's contribution as an Honorary Fellow and to working with him in advancing research, dialogue, and regional cooperation.
Birat Anupam is a Kathmandu-based journalist, translator, and author with extensive experience across local, provincial, national, and international media platforms.
He gained international recognition in 2023 for breaking the story of Nepali citizens joining Russian military forces during Ukraine war, a report that led to his appearance in several international documentaries and news features broadcast by NHK World, CNA, KBS, and other global media networks.
In 2025, Anupam translated 'Report from Lhasa', a seminal work by Nepal’s pioneering anthropologist and diplomat, Dor Bahadur Bista which was tiled in Nepali as 'Lhasako Khabar'. His first book, 'Pahilo Aam Nirwachan 2015' (The First General Election 1959), explores the history of Nepal’s first parliamentary election and was shortlisted for the 'Sahitya Post Nonfiction Prize 2026'.
Anupam’s primary areas of reporting and writing include tourism, diplomacy, environmental issues, and history. His articles and analyses have appeared in prominent international publications, including The Diplomat (USA), UKClimbing (UK), Australian Outlook (Australia), Global Times (China), The Diplomatist (India), Inter Press Service (Italy), Ceylon Today (Sri Lanka), and Kuensel (Bhutan).
Active across digital and social media platforms such as Facebook, X, and TikTok, Anupam combines traditional journalism with modern storytelling. He currently serves as 'Special Correspondent' at Shilapatra Media, a leading Kathmandu-based digital news platform, where he contributes both for texts and video contents.
